3 x grandfather born Kidderminster or Wolverley
« on: Friday 13 June 14 16:02 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm still trying to locate the correct birth record for James Lewis, born about 1840/1 died in 1899

I've gone back through the census records starting with 1891 when he was living in Bolton on Dearne, WR Yorkshire age 50.  Born in Kidderminster abt 1841.  I know that this James is correct as a starting point.

I can find a James on the census if i go back 10 years at a time on the 1881 - 71 - 61, each time the age decreases by 10 years so appears to fit & these all state birth place as Kidderminster.  But then going back to 1851 where he would have been 10 the only one I find that seems to fit has his birth place as Wolverley.  The census records also appear to show him with a mother named Maria.

So with the above info I have ordered a birth record from GRO ref; 1840 Jun qtr vol 18 page 388.  This shows father called James Lewis and mother called Maria Ainswolth.  I'm not convinced that this is the correct James I'm after though.  A search on free BMD for 1840-1 in the Staffordshire & Worcestershire (I've searched both counties as I'm not sure where the boundaries would have been) area gives me 10 results.

What county would Wolverley have been part of in 1840/1 & should I order a different birth record in order to eliminate the wrong ones?

Thanks

Shaw, Dyson, McGarrigle, Jackson, Lewis, Jones, Lord, Broadhurst.

According to genuki, Wolverley was in Worcestershire in 1868. Didnīt see any indication that it had changed counties before that.

James LEWIS Married Maria HAINSWORTH, 2 October 1836, Kidderminster, Worcester
I can only find James Christening, 9 June 1840, St. Marys, Kidderminster to JAMES/MARIA
Both on Familysearch.Org

1851 Census as you know Maria is with her Father in Law, Thomas Lewis born c 1771 Kidderminster.
Thats how its transcribed but image is Boarder/Widow and Thomas is Unm, and James age 1 is down as his Nephew.

1841 Census
Kidderminster, Worcestershire
HO107/1208/4/Kidderminster
James LEWIS, 35, Carpet Weaver?
Maria, 35
James, 1

Burial;
James LEWIS, 8 Aug 1846, Kidderminster, age 43, birth c 1803

Possible;
JAMES Lewis Christened 22 May 1804, Kiddeminster to JOHN/SARAH

What is James Snrs Occp on the Birth Cert you have?

Trish :)
