re Immigration records.
The NSW 1854 arrival on the 'Calcutta' turns out to be a member of crew described as 'fireman.' He looks a possible.
The Victorian 1853 arrival on the 'Wave' turns out to be an organist, and looks to have found work at St Peter's church following an advert in the Argus newspaper 1855.
The South Australian arrival was a Mr Hirst occupying his own cabin - not sure if he was 'c' for crew(?) as the other two people on board are certainly 'p' for passenger. No other info of him.

only place near spelling Wardel (WARDELL mistranscribed becomes WARDEN)

Yes, we will investigate this possibility. Have emailed the Northumberland & Durham Family History society for their help.

Perhaps I should have mentioned this but when you migrated to Yorkshire I thought it was no longer relevant - I did look at Warden, Northumberland baptisms 1830 - 1840 but there was no sign of any Hirst (by whatever spelling) between those years.

Thanks anyway Christine. Process of elimination I think.

I have just found a place called Wardle Pit near Throckley, parish of Newburn, Northumberland.

Thought I'd let you know as it is a phonetic match to Wardal.

Christine,
I'd also found that, however if you look at the old maps it seems to be simply the name of a coal mine - it appears on the 1856 map as 'Wardle Pit (Coal)'. http://dmm.org.uk/colliery/z022.htm
I looked through Throckley on several censuses and didn't find it as a place-name.
I also checked Newburn baptisms and didn't find anyone called Hirst/Hurst  :(

Ah well, back to the drawing board.

I assumed that it was more than a coal mine because it appears on the 1860 farms list from Woodhorn   :-\

Yes, I thought that rather odd, but I can't see any evidence it was more than a coal pit (but I am happy to be proved wrong).
