Wortley Family Nottingham c1750-1800
« on: Friday 04 July 14 02:09 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help me with details of the following family:

Robert Wortley married Ann  Leake 7 Jan 1772 St Marys Nottingham

They had the following children (from IGI) all baptized at High Pavement Presbyterian Chapel
Mary 29 Oct 1772 who married Henry Latham --the line I am following
Henry 17 Mar 1784
Robert 20 Jan 1776
Robert Leake 17 Jun 1779

I have found a burial in the National Burial Index for a Robert Wortley bur,Feb 1817 St Marys Nottingham ( which is where he and Ann were married). There is an estimated birth date of 1748 .

I cannot find out any more about Robert except that there are various news items about a robbery in 1783 of the shop of Robert Wortley Hosier and Hatter in Saddlergate Derby and then all the stock being sold 2 years later 1785. I am wondering if this is him as his daughter Mary married into a respected family of Grocers and Drapers. On her wedding her place is given as Nottingham but Henry Latham is from Ilkeston Derbyshire.

There is no mention of a Robert Wortley (of an appropriate date) in the IGI. Has anyone any suggestions where I should go next?

Many thanks

Sue
(ps. I am in South Australia so I cannot visit in person!!)

Thank you so much Carol and Trish. I can now discount the Robert Wortley of Derbyshire as Robert had a son Henry in 1784.
I have the birth of Ann Leake who married Robert and she was baptized 22 Jan 1742/3 (double date) so that makes the burial in 1815 about right.

I will follow up the Robert Leake Wortley--a son as I know there is some on-line material on him but the Grocer detail is a bonus.

So many thanks

Sue

Hi Carol and Trish

I have just found a baptism for Robert Leake Wortley in Anc which puzzles me. There are 2 entries both the same birth date and same baptism date. The first is the one I first quoted from High Pavement Presbyterian the second is the Old Meeting Presbyterian Ilkeston so my original hunch that there was a connection with Ilkeston is borne out. As I know Ann Robert's wife was born in Nottingham St Marys perhaps this suggests that I should be searching for Robert Wortley senior in Derbyshire??

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Sue

Hi Sue

I think they are roughly  about 7 miles apart,  so perhaps the minister covered 2 churches and recorded in both registers?
