A few years ago I traveled around all the graveyards in this area and transcribed all the Rayne/Raine inscriptions I could find, so I thought that I was sure to have some useful ancestral info for you. There were many Rayne/Raine farms, including Park End, Step End, Corn Park, High Corn Park, Saddle Bow, Low Selset, etc. (and that is just those south of the river!), but unfortunately I can't find any with a connection to Belle Settle Farm. My ancestors moved north of the Tees in the early 1500s from Thringarth and I have been unable to find any connection to any of these farms.

Incidentally, I see that last year someone was looking for permission to demolish Belle Settle and I hope they never succeed:

Hi,
The occupant of Belle Settle Farm was William Raine, b. 1811, and his wife, Jane. William was still there in 1881 census. He was a joiner/farmer and he had a son (amongst others), Thomas, b. 1832 who married Elizabeth Raine, b.1833. I think they moved to Eggleston. They had a son, Samuel, b. 1865 who in turn had a son George Louis who was born in Annfield Plain and is the late father of a friend of mine. Sorry if the info is a bit lacking but I have passed all my findings on to the family. William lived at Belle Settle for quite some time. If you find anything of interest about the family we would love to hear. We had a look at Mickleton Churchyard a couple of weeks ago but were not sure if anyone there was of this part of the family. Some had moved to Eggleston as I said.
Cheers, Joyce

I did note a monumental inscription at Egglestone as follows:

Elizabeth wife of Thomas Raine of Egglestone
died Jan 12 1885 aged 53
Jane daughter, died June 22 aged 22
Emma daughter, died Jul 8 1889 aged 21
Frederick son, died Oct 12 1893 aged 22
Thomas the above, died Dec 6 1905 aged 74

As Samuel was living in Anfield Plain, he would have been buried nearer there.

You may also be interested by the info contained in the Mickleton Lease of 1607, which gives an idea of some of the Raines who farmed in the area (the downloadable document is quite fascinating):

Anyone doing the raines in Eggleston, I would suggest getting the Clevelands FHS Eggleston MI's done in 1992, as it has quite a few Raines in it.

George Raine was my grandmother's younger brother. His parents were Samuel Raine and margeret jane Bell. My grandma was Florence Raine. I remember him a little bit as he lived in Annfield Plain Count Durham near my gran. The Raines were indeed from Mickleton.

Hi Cathryn,
Thank you for your message. I am only helping the family to research and will pass your message on to my friends, one of George's sons and his wife. Have you any idea why the family left Belle Settle Farm in Mickleton all those years ago?
