Marriage Certificates 1790-& 1812 Kildonan - Sutherland Scotland
« on: Monday 31 March 14 10:14 BST (UK) »

Hi all Rootschatters,

Would anyone know if Marriage Certificates are available, [ if so, who from], for persons married in Kildonan, Sutherland Scotland, for years 1790, & 1812.

My G.G.G.G. Grandfather John Polson, married a Margaret McLeod in 1790. He produced a son, William Polson, he married Betty McKay 1812.

Hope you can help.

Regards

George

Hope you can help

Scottish records are in general very good and you can get copies of records of marriage  - but I don't think they had actual certificates at that time.

Go to Scotlandspeople and look - you have to pay to get to the actual record - but the cost of the records is really not too much compared with almost everywhere else - not only that but the women tended to keep their maiden names so making hunting much easier through the records in general.   I have had such fun on that site and found so much worth while.

Google it and have a look.  Unless it has changed, it is easy to navigate.

Sorry I don't have enough credits at the moment, but I can see that they are there so you could download it for not too much.  About £7 for 30 credits  - looking costs 1 credit and to get the record costs 5 credits.

Just adding to Wiggy's info.

The records you are looking for are from before the start of official registration in Scotland (from 1855) and will be from the Old Parish Registers (OPRs). As Wiggy mentions, you can access images of these via Scotlands People.

Don't expect too much though. OPR entries are pretty minimal in terms of the info they included. Very often, no more than a one line with just bride and groom's names. Be aware also that entries you have found so far may be for the proclamation of banns for the marriage rather than the marriage entry itself. Unfortunately, you don't know until you look at the image what it is you are looking at.

See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&406 for guidance.

Very true Monica!    ;)

 - and some of the things I downloaded were marriage banns or intentions to marry - but at least they were some proof.  I still like the Scottish records!   :D :D
