Baptism for Ellen Hoynes
« on: Wednesday 01 January 14 15:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have previously found the following baptism record for my Gt-Grandmother Ellen Hoynes:

Church Baptism Record
Name:   Ellen Hoynes   Date of Baptism / Birth:   27/01/1864
Address:   Rathlicken   Parish / District:   MULLINAVAT
Gender:    Female   County   Co. Kilkenny
Denomination:   Roman Catholic
Father:   John Hoynes   Mother:   Ellen Deady
Informant 1:   William Murphy   Sponsor 2 /
Informant 2:   Nancy Grace
Notes: SP2 GIVEN AS NANCE

However, I have always thought that the mother's maiden name was probably wrong, and should be Ellen GRACE.

I recently got a birth certificate and most of the information matches the baptism, apart from the mother's surname. Note that Hoynes and Hynes are used interchangeably, and so are Rahillakeen/Rathlicken/Rathlikeen.

name:               Ellen Hynes
gender:             Female
birth date:    25 Jan 1864
birthplace:            0816,ULLID,KILKENNY,IRELAND
father's name:    John Hynes
mother's name:  Ellen Grace
Batch number:   C70122-4
system origin:    Ireland-ODM
source film number:    101083
Place of birth: Rahillakeen.

I think my next step would be to look at the original record of the baptism, to check the transcription. What would be the easiest way of doing that? Are there researchers that could do it for me, or could someone look it up for me? Or I was thinking of visiting an LDS centre, as I think I have the correct film number of: 0926201.

Thanks for any help,

Richard

This is the listing for the Mullinavat R.C. parish records from John Grenhams' site

The LDS film no given  is the same as the one you have.

Hi,

Thanks for that. Good to be sure that I have the right film number.

I've since found out that the LDS might be able to provide an image for me.

I've filled in the form available below, and am now awaiting a response - it could take 4-6 weeks, but it is free, and a lot easier for me than visiting an LDS centre.  :)

It may be that both records have been transcribed correctly. I have come across similar problems where the mother's surname is different for baptism and birth and yet it is most clearly the same child. In at least a few of these cases it was because the mother was known by 2 different surnames.
In another case I found a baptism (pre-registration) for a child whose mother's maiden name was Hunter but the priest had listed her as Hawk!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

A quick update.

I got a reply from the LDS last week on the 24-Feb-2014 - so it took 7 weeks.

They've supplied an image of the baptism entry so I've been able to check the transcription for myself.

It's a free service and not automated - so a great service from them.

The transcription was accurate which is a shame as I would have liked the baptism to have matched the birth certificate.

On reflection though, I think I can be fairly sure that the baptism and birth certificate are for the same person.

So many of the other details match and Rathlikeen is such a small place - the chance of 2 Ellen Hoynes born with 3 days of each other must be slim!

I have other instances in my tree of certificates that are plain wrong - so it could be that.

Or the baptism entry could have been filled in wrongly.

Or the mother Ellen Hoynes nee Grace or Deady could have been known by different surnames at different points in her life.

I suppose it gives me another surname to work with and that might help in the future.

Thanks for everyone's help,

Richard

According to the index search on the RootsIreland website, John Hynes married Ellen Grace in 1846, the parish / district was Mullinvat.

The church marriage record content is pay to view, don't be surprised if you don't get much more than bride/groom townland and witnesses.

Other possibilities for siblings are the following baptism "hits" when searching the RootsIreland website index citing mother Ellen Grace and father John:

Mary Hoynes 1849;
Johanna Hoynes 1858; and
Bridget Hoynes 1861.

All listed under Mullinavat (RC) Parish. As before, the record content is pay to view.
