GRESTY Annie M (New Brighton, Cheshire)
« on: Monday 11 August 14 06:02 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I have hit a brick wall with following person

Annie M Gresty
born 1862 New Brighton, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

I can locate her on the following UK Census Records 1891, 1901 and 1911 after this she migrated to Australia in 1912, maybe there is some one else doing research on same family (yes I know, long-shot)

I am able to locate her in the 1891 Census, however she was not listed with her family as she was in service

From the 1891 Census it lists her only as domestic Housemaid see below

Hi Greg, :)
Cheshirebmd shows the marriage of Annie and Fred as a Warrington Civil Marriage so you would have to invest in the marriage certificate to be certain of the name of her father.
 http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

You would be able to buy the cert from the GRO it will cost you £9.25

1862 - new brighton ??...I would have thought that New Brighton would have been under Wallasey / Birkenhead at that period ...the Promfrom Seacombe to New Brighton wasn`t built until 1890`s when New Brighton became a huge holliday resort ....a merchant in 1830-40 bought all the land that is now New Brighton and he built Perch Rock etc ...so - 1891 census - it would have been in "vogue"for a young lady to say she was born in New Brighton when she was born in Birkenhead area  - cos it sounded more upper class .........I am going to find out when New Brighton became a town - I will be amazed if it was 1862 era...back soon
ADDED...ha ha- well I got that wrong ....Perch Rock was built by the government 1829 and it had 18 guns / canons to prevent Smuggling up and down the River Mersey ....
a merchant did purchase all the land around that area in 1830 and it wasn`t until the 1860`s that he built the pier ...it looks like it was named New Brighton in the early 1860`s by the mercnat who wanted it to resemble Brighton in Sussex
I think that the family Rolnora  has found in 1871 will almost certainly be your Annie M Gresty ....

New Brighton was a hamlet in Liscard parish, which itself was formed in 1866 from Wallasey Ancient Parish.

Thanks KGarrad ...I was pretty sure it didn`t exist in 1862...

mar qtr 1861 Thomas Gresty to Margaret Lee - Liverpool 8b 290  I think there is a good chance these are the parents of Annie M Gresty b 1862 New Brighton ...
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk has the marriage at St Peter and IGI has a baptism at the same church 8 years later for Esther
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NYD1-8QX
so even though they are having children in New Brighton / Birkenhead - they are still baptising their children at St Peter in Liverpool ....
