Dr William Bell Carlyle
« on: Monday 16 December 13 04:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am searching for the actual birth date of a Dr William Bell Carlyle b. 1788 Satur, Middlebie, Dumfries, Scotland. His birth date was derived from his death certificate age when he died at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia.

His wife was Elizabeth Gatton, although there is no apparent record of their marriage in Australia. He was ships surgeon and she a convict on the way to Oz.

His parents were Francis Carlyle (1739-1819) and Mary Irving.

If an actual birth date of William Bell is known, I would like to know its source if possible.

Is it hard to get birth records around 1788 in Dumfriesshire?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

I have the Windingsheet book for Port Macquarie and it doesn't have his exact birthdate. It has a whole page on his death and says his birth was about 1788. Do you happen to have or have seen the Windingsheet book? It has quite a lot of information on Dr William Carlyle Bell. Lot's of statements he's written about deaths in the area.

Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I am aware of the book but do not have a copy.

I still do not have an exact date of birth.

Do you have an interest in the Doctor? I am tracing down the Gardner-Cason-Hughes line.

Regards

John

John, I am sure you have all of this but just for detail here. There are least five possible siblings' birth entries showing in Middlebie. Only father's name, Francis, is showing. These births start from 1768 up to 1776. Can't see an entry for William unfortunately. Old Parish Registers are patchy, with many lost or destroyed over the years.

Thanks Monica,

There were 9 siblings and, yes, the birth date of William Bell was not given. His father was Francis who was married to Mary Irving. Francis' father was Dr John Carlyle who was married to Jane Bell (hence the 'Bell' in William's name).

You would think that the parish priests would have realised that their info would eventually be on the internet! Anyhow, who cares about future generations, what have they ever done for us?

I would also appreciate any help on his birthdate. He is my great great great grandfather, but no relatives seem to have this bit of information.
