"Leathad" or "Laid" did not exist as a settled area until the early years of the 19th Century, when land was provided to tenants cleared from the townships between Ceannabeinne and Hope. It did not have National Grid electricity till 1979, and was regarded as an utterly bleak place to live until at least the 1990s. It's now a vibrant little community - one of the more successful parts of the huge underpopulated parish.
