Found a Thomas Loughlin born to Patrick and Mary Mannion in the Milltown church records December 17, 1874. Came from a village spelled Cloonaghanew?

Hi,

A lot of my people come from the Milltown area, and I know it pretty well......I havent looked up any maps or searched on line, but there is definitely a townland in the parish called Cloonagh so perhaps Cloonaghnew is just a "distortion" of that and the word "new" might have been added on to distinguish two different sets of houses in the townland....does that sound realistic?

The following link gives some details about the Ballyglass/Milltown area on the Mayo/Galway border and it might be helpful in the context of your research.  It also includes a photo that contains several people from Cloonagh.  There is another photo  on the same page that mentions cloonaghgarve.

Hope this helps.

Hello there,

This is what I love about Rootschat and the Internet in general. You post something and years later it can still provide fresh infomation.
It just shows you, never give up on a topic.

Thats very interesting about those folks in the Milltown parish records.

Could you tell me, how complete are the Milltown records?
Of course if they are in good shape and thats the only Patrick Loughlin born to a Patrick Loughlin anywhere around the 1861 date then its a good bet, thats my man.

Thanks

Jonathan

Dear Patrick,
My grandfather was station master, living in Pollaturick, at the time of the 1911 census. His name was Pierce Brosnan, originally from Kerry, married to Jane Costelloe from Portarlington, grandfather of the actor of the same name.

Dear Patrick,
Do your records mention my grandfather, Pierce Brosnan, who was station master there in 1911? He had at least two children there, Mai and Thomas, before they moved to Kerry.
Regards,
Martin Wallace

Hi, Galwayreader

The only reason I think its Co. Galway is because thats what i've been told by family as to where our family came from in Ireland.

Don't know if this helps, but my Great-Grandfather's wife Julia Connolly's family came from Kilmain in Co. Mayo which I see is not too far from Milltown, Co. Galway.

Sorry, I don't have any better information for you to go at.

Thanks

Jonathan
Hi, Julia Connolly was a relative of mine. Her family comes from Ballyglass[in Co. Mayo] and it is the other half of the parrish of Milltown, which is in Co. Galway. All the best with your hunt. Regards, Mike
