50's address query (possibly a hospital)
« on: Saturday 31 May 08 00:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Me again - sorry for the mountain of questions; the amount of secrets and untruths told by people who've passed have made this family tree very difficult to unravel.

Can anyone tell me where 15 Newmill and Easthill Road, Hartwood [or possibly Hewmill and Easthill Road] was?

It's listed on a 1950 Death Certificate and I was told the person died at Ruchill Hospital, but that address doesn't seem to tie up at all.

Thanks again
Julie

Hi Julie,

The address could be Hartwood Hospital, which is roughly at the point on the map Gadget has posted.

My 3 x great grandfather was a patient there from when it opened until his death in 1911.

A brief history can be found at:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/scotlandgenealogy/hartwood_hospital_was_in_its_hey.htm

Best wishes

Hi Julie

If you give the name of the person, I'll have a look and see if I can make out what it really says. It could be that the person died at Ruchill Hospital and underneath is 'usual residence' -- with that address.

Thanks for all the help folks.

Gadget - the address he died at is definitely 15 Newmill and Canthill Road (I can see it now so obviously whereas I thought it said Easthill) and his usual address in Grove St is listed underneath in Usual Residence.

His name was Gregor McGregor Summers Seenan who died in 1950 (Jan 12th - registered in Calderhead district).

He died of Myocardial Degeneration Bronchiotosis (not sure of the exact spelling of the last bit between the ch and the tosis) whereas I thought Hartwood was a mental illness hospital?

I'm reading up about it but it just doesn't give the full address. There are masses of links.

Rockford's pinpointing of it on my map link does suggest that this was where he died though.

Thanks Gadget; by the looks of it Hartwood Hospital is the best bet.

The only other hospital i've heard them mention was Oakbank, but I don't think that's the right area IIRC.

Thanks all for the help.

Hello i believe we may be distantly related. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Gwynne - daughter of Mary. Elizabeth married a Hunter who was mother to my Gran. My sisters middle name is Dale. I am trying to find out more about the Gwynnes. I know they lived in Bank Street, Stirling (my home town).
