Lewis & Mary Jones, St Clears area
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have been trying for several weeks to locate two of my Great Great Grandmothers siblings after the 1881 Welsh census.  They are:

Lewis Jones born c. 1862
Mary Jones born c. 1864

They are both living with their parents on the 1881 census:

1881 Census, Woolstone Farm, St Clears, Carmarthenshire, Wales

JONES, JAMES HEAD MAR 52 FARMER OF 200 ACRES CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, PHEBE WIFE MAR 51 FARMERS WIFE CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, HOWELL SON UNM 27 FARMERS SON CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, JOHN SON UNM 20 FARMERS SON CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, LEWIS SON UNM 19 FARMERS SON CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, MARY DAU UNM 16 FARMERS DAUGHTER CARMARTHENSHIRE
JONES, MIRIAM DAU UNM 13 FARMERS DAUGHTER CARMARTHENSHIRE
THOMAS, ANNE SERVANT UNM 24 GENERAL SERVANT CARMARTHENSHIRE
REYNOLDS, MARY SERVANT UNM 24 GENERAL SERVANT DOMESTIC CARMARTHENSHIRE

Where do they go to after this?  I am completely stuck!!!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Helen

Hi

By 1891 Mary would have been 27yrs old so was probably married

There are a couple of Lewis Jones entries on the 1891 born within 2 yrs of 1862 but the problem is that the 1871 and 1881 censuses only give Carmarthen as the birthplace and not the actual part of the county - in fact the 1871 shows England Carmarthen for the whole family

Hello

I believe that Mary Jones would still have been married after 1883 as there is a Mary Jones listed as witness on my Great Great Grandmother's marriage certificate.

Any other hints for tracking these people down would be appreciated.

Thanks

Whilst she may have been single in 1883 - in the 8 yrs following she could have married

By 1891 - Lewis was 29yrs old and possibly married

Unless you get any additional info re: who they married and when and where - you will find it both difficult and expensive to prove it

In 1881 the family were living in the registration district of Carmarthen.  Assuming both Mary and Lewis married within that reg district there are 25 Mary Jones marriages between 1883-March qtr 1891 (excluding those with second christian names) but only 4 Lewis Jones marriages between 1881-1891

The only way you would find which was the right one is by knowing what the fathers name and occupation is on the marriage cert - and you would have to buy a copy of the cert to get that info or use the following procedure.

Whilst it would not cost much for Lewis - it would for Mary

Search by GRO

If you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and have found more than one reference to the name you are researching, or are unsure which is the entry you require, the GRO offer reference checking online.

The charge is £7 for action on the first entry, which includes the cost of the certificate, and £3 for checking each subsequent reference against the information you have provided.   You have the option of asking them to either stop at the first reference which agrees with your information or to check all references

You must give them one piece of information that you are sure will appear on the certificate for example,  the exact date of the event or a parent(s) name(s). You must fill in the reference checking sheet which is accessed by pressing the reference checking button near the bottom of the page,  and fill in all the fields that you would like the entry to be checked against before you press the 'Submit' button. A certificate will only be issued if the entry they check matches the checking point you give them.

The GRO are increasing the cost from £7 to £9.25 from 1/4 and it's possible the cost for a failed search may also be increased

Thank you very much.  That is very helpful information.  I may try the process with Lewis and see what turns up.

Thanks again.
