Hi,
have you tried this site?

http://www.spatial-literacy.org/

I have just tried the link and there is a message to say they are moving their server, but will (should) be back on line after the weekend.  It has distribution for the present and the 19thC and other bits of info - the maps are great, some of the other stuff takes a bit of time to understand.
Regards,
Carra

Another trick is to go to 1881 census on familysearch and type in surnames and see what the distribution is like as you scan down the entries. e.g. I am interested in FORSHAW of which 80% are in Lancashire.

The spatial literacy site is available again. Its totally fascinating how some names have travelled and others haven't so much. The frequency is useful as well - its helped me to work out which of the names in my ancestry are unusual and which others are fairly common but I just haven't come across them much before.

Have a try - its addictive!

Armitage, Austin, Bray, Brogden, Cawthrey, Cox, Fielding, Gill, Hemingway, Hutchinson Jackson, Kay / Kaye, Marsden, Marshall, Midgley, Moore, Naylor, Peel, Powell, Priestley, Scott, Sharp, Shooter, Spencer, Stead, Tuke, Wade, Ward / Warde, Wightman and Wood - all from within a 15 mile radius of Leeds. I could draw a circle on an OS map with villages of origin!
