Fotheringham in Leven 1790

Can anyone tell me how these two Fotheringham men were related please?
Or anything about them?
DAVID FOTHERINGHAM of 'KIRKLAND BY LEVEN' is mentioned in a 1790 document about
ALEX FOTHERINGHAM of Links of Arduthie, STONEHAVEN, FETTERESSO, Kincardine who died
presumably the year before in 1789. 
Searched, no records found so far for this Alex Fotheringham.
The doc also mentions his son Alexander, a pupil age unknown. No records found.
I have no other info. Hoping someone on the Fife boards will know which Fotheringham
branch lived at Kirkland by Leven (or Methil ?) in the late 1700's, early 1800's.
