Harold Orlando Lane & Bessie Dee
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 11:56 BST (UK) »
I am new to the site but hopefully someone can help me in my quest to find out what happened to my Grandfathers Brother Harold Orlando Lane born King Stanley Gloucestershire England 1882 and his wife Elizabeth (Bessie) Lane nee Dee from Avening Gloucestershire England. All that I know is, they sailed from England for Canada about 1918-1920 and ended up in Bienfait. They later had 2 daughters but I have no names. Can anyone help please?

I could not find Harold and wife in ancestry passenger records and collectionscanada is not granting me access at the moment.  I did find some links to Bienfait, Saskatchewan.  Was your ancestor a miner as there was a strike in the Bienfait mine in 1931 that is described in an online reference.
Below are some links that might be of interest.

Thank you for your very swift response. As far as I know Harold was either a shop floor engineer i.e Machinist or a Farmer. What I do know is they never returned to Uk only for a swift visit in the 1960s for a family re-union.

A few other resources for you to check out

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cansk/Saskatchewan/

Saskatchewan Genealogical Society
http://www.saskgenealogy.com/
Under their link to Burial Registries http://www.saskgenealogy.com/databases/burialindex/nm_BurialSearch.aspx
you can find a record for Bessie Lane 1989 in Weyburn, Sask.   None for Harold that would allow him to return home in the 1960s.  Do you have the record of his arrival in England in the 1960s - did that give you any further leads (such as address in Canada).

It looks like Harold was in Canada prior to 1918. I found WWI attestation papers for Harold Orlando Lane. The attestation papers indicate he was born 2 Apr 1888 in Stroud, England. His next of kin is listed as his father (no name given) with an address of King Stanley, England. Harold's occupation is listed as machinist. Here's a link to the attestation papers at Library and Archives Canada:

There are instructions at the link on how to order his file. The cost depends on the size of the file.

There is a Harold O. Lane who departed from Southampton on the Ascania and arrived in Boston on 11 Mar 1913. He was 24, a machinist and his final destination was Toronto.

He returned to Canada with other troops on the Tunisian which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Quebec on 14 Jul 1919. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC (he's on the second line in the section on the left):

Elizabeth was also on the Tunisian which arrived 14 Jul 1919 but is listed separately from her husband. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC (she's 4th from the bottom):

I wish to return to this post and would be grateful for any further help as follows:
We now know that Harold Orlando Lane born 1888 Kings Stanley Stroud Gloucestershire England and his new bride Elizabeth (Bessie Dee born 1894 Avening Stroud Gloucestershire returned to Canada aboard TUNISIA arriving in Quebec 14th July 1919. The passenger list shows their destination to be Toronto. I am led to believe  Bienfait is where they were heading, but I may be wrong. I know they eventually had two daughters born in Canada who I have to presume have also by now passed on. Is there any way to find out 1) where they ended up 2) When and where they died 3) The names of the two children where and when they were born. 4) Did the daughters marry and have children.  This one is proving to be a "hard nut to crack" but with your help maybe I can get there this time! Kind regards Milavia

1921 census for 154 Gamble Ave. Toronto, Ontario
Harold Lane, 33, immigration 1912, machinist b. England and wife Bessie, 27 b. England immigration 1919 with daughter Joyce 1, b. Ont.

Family tree on ancestry shows death of Harold in 1974 at Toronto and 1972 for Bessie again in Toronto.  tree just shows the year of death.
Daughter Joyce 1919-1994 with last name of Fabbro - no other details
Daughter Yvonne Lillian Megenbir 1927-1988 with birth in Toronto and death in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.  Husband Frederick 1933-2007.  It looks like they had one son who's details are private.
