Old Building Gallowgate Glasgow?
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 10:20 BST (UK) »
My ancestors lived at 326 Gallowgate Glasgow,  in 1864.  I know most of the Gallowgate seems to have gone, as have old buildings, but have "Street view" requested 326 Gallowgate and came up with the attached photo of building. (hope I am not breaking any rules by putting it on here)..  Does anyone have local knowledge of the area, or even of the specific building?  It looks old - and somewhat "special" so am wondering if it is of significance - how old it is - would it have been around mid 19th century?  Too much to hope for?  And would it have been close to my ancestors "residence"?
Any thoughts welcome.

It's certainly old Magbill, 18th century with a nepus gable facing the Gallowgate. It has been restored along with the building nearby which houses Heilan Jessie's pub. This is contemporary with the Georgian Barracks (1770's?) built across the road and the barrackmasters wife (Heilan Jessie) was reputedly the landlord. Your building is possibly around the same age, you might get further info' from "Virtual Mitchell" the Mitchell Library site. Before the barracks were built troops were billeted on the townsfolk, the site has been recently developed by Morrison's  following an archaeological survey, these two buildings illustrate what we have lost, the Gallowgate must have been lined with such buildings.
Monica's pic' looks like a Victorian tenement, don't think it's the same building.

Skoosh.

thank you so much Monica and Skoosh.

The 1931 photo naming "The Carnmore" - seems familiar, as if I have seen it elsewhere.. what a pity it isn't a wider photo - might have included the large white restored building on the Street view coloured photo.  Thanks for that great info Skoosh - it's amazing to think that my poor relatives might have seen these places!!  And I have noted also the restored "Heilan Jessie's pub"..  It is great to get an idea of my ancestors first Glasgow home.  I hate to be dumb - but can you tell me who "Morrison's" is?  and yes - isn't it amazing how we value "old" often when it is too late - and most of it is gone!!  Thanks again rootschatters - always educating me!

Morrison's is a large supermarket chain in the UK!

They built a new supermarket on Gallowgate/Barrack Street.

Oh Thanks Kgarrad,

It is nearly 30 years since I last visited "The Auld homeland"!!  So a bit vague on such obvious things lolol!  Really nice to find these old buildings though - hope Glasgow is cherishing them!!  The City Chambers, Kelvin Hall... all those big civic buildings are important - but it is these "lesser" buildings which really give the character to a city!  Who knows one day, I may seem them in real life!
Cheers !

It's a Morrison's supermarket Maggbill, I don't know when the Barracks were taken down, long before my time, the perimiter wall still exists, but much reduced in height.
The "Calton Weavers" were much given to revolutionary principles and the odd riot, fatalities included. The Glasgow general Sir John Moore at one battle in Spain ordered a unit, presumably the 39th, to chase the French off the field, with the order, "Doon the Gallowgate wi them!" doubtless recalling past glories. :)

Maybe this is where you have seen the photo before (same photo as showing on Virtual Mitchell linked above) www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/carnmore.html
