Fred,
There is an Alexander Jack lodging at 1 Neilston Street Paisley on the 1851.
He is 26 and a Hand Loom Weaver born in Paisley.
His landlady is a Margaret Buchanan age 52 widow. One other lodger Agnes Parkhill age 52 a Washerwoman from Ayr.
Haven't turned up William or Grahame yet.

Thanks Looby.

I'm wondering if this is the right Alexander. How common is the name?  One trouble with census is that long given names get abbreviated.

Alexander Jack & Agnes Campbell
Marriage: 15 Dec 1843  High Church Paisley

Hi  Fred,
You could be right - there is another Alexander Jack age 15 on the 1841 who is living in the household of a family called Wilson :-\. He could well be the lodger on the 1851.
Equally there is also a William Jack aged 18 on the 1851 Census who is the son of Peter and Helen Jack and the males  are all Grocers !
Looby :)

The name is a lot more common than I initially thought.  Now I've found some early records with the name as JAK.

Hi Fred,
Have you located Catherine on the 1901 and 1911 Census yet?
I think you need to find her on them to establish if she was remarried or living with a "bidey-in" or it could be the grand nephew who registered the death got muddled.

Hello Looby,

I only have a few credits left so I'm reluctant to spend 12. I might just get the image of 1911.  The results from an index search of SP in 1901 don't match what has been found.

1901 At 158 Parliamentary Road St Rollox  Catherine aged 56 with five others aged from 26 to 5.  That can't be my Catherine.

Catherine McNaughton in 1901:

Age 59 Govan - hit on SP but not found

Age 56 St Rollox - no hit on SP  but the one above with household of 6

Age 54 St Rollox - hit on SP but not found.

Fred
