Katherine Mc Dermott
« on: Friday 10 February 12 01:14 GMT (UK) »
New to RootsChat and residing in USA but need some help in finding any info on a Katherine Mc Dermott, known in letters to my Gram as Kate.  The last time she communicated was during WWII.  The address on the letters said Belbeck Street, if I remember correctly in Glasgow, Scotland.  She had several children and I am not sure of their ages.  One may have been William after my Uncle who died in New York City.  The family has reason to believe she was at this address until the early 60's from a visit to Scotland years ago and research produced at that time.  Also, this family is connected to Meiklejohn from Govan.  Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Charlotte

Not sure of birth or date dates but I can guess it may have been late 1800's and assume death may have been in early 1960's.

My Gram was vague about her family roots and my Dad showed me some letters as a child ... Not much to go on, I know.

 :)

I would surmise she was born and died within Glasgow area.  She was married to my fathers brother William, who I understood came to the US ahead of her to make his so called "fortune" and bring the family to NY at a later date.  Unfortunately, he died in what may have been the mid 1920's but  I am unable to find anything out about his birth or death as I have no dates.  I am unable to trace Grandparents back to UK without more to go on, which is why I am looking for information on Katherine, her children or even her grandchildren, so I can find a starting place for Ancestors. I believe the exact street address may have been 18 Belbeck Street.  Her name and address as I remember from the letters I saw as a child.  My Grandparents were James and Anne Mc Dermott (nee Meiklejohn).

Hi all  :)

Looking at the index on Scotlandspeople there are no marriages for a W---- McDermott to a K--------
in Lanark 1900 to 1940

3 marriages for a W------ McDermott to a Cath---- in Lanark 1910 - 1940
Filling in William and Catherine still gives 3 matches

If William died before 1930 that leaves 2 marriages

William McDermott and Catherine McInnes 1924 Lanark

William McDermott and Catherine Campbell 1914 Lanark

:-\ If they were married in Lanark

Did your Grandparents marry in Scotland ?(Cant see a marriage either Sancti)

Hi MsKitka

Will be hard to search this without confirming some more details from info probably from the States.

Your grandparents, James and Anne: have you found them on any US census up to 1930? You mention tracing them back to the UK so assuming they also left for the US. Did you know them? What birth years do you estimate for them, likely from their death years. Thinking just about your father, what do you know about him - birth year, birth place etc.

It is hard to try and make links back without working back and confirming stage by stage.

Monica  :)
