James Aitkenhead who emigrated to the USA.
« on: Monday 13 October 14 14:01 BST (UK) »
Hi.
This the James that started my previous post. Born 25/02/1882, Kirkton, Blantyre, twin of Mary, he emigrated with his parents William Aitkenhead and Emily Kate Harrison in 1886. They are in the 1900 US Census in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. James is 18, stone cutter apprentice. He marries Anna Jennie Emilia Larsen, 31, widow in New York on 04/10/1907, and that is the last that I could find, which is why I turned to SP to see if he had returned to Scotland and found the red herring.
Further searching today, found him being drafted into the army - James Cant Aitkenhead b 25/02/1882 inducted 1918. I only want to know if he died in the US to exclude him from further research. Ancestry is of no help as it wants me to upgrade to World status.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Aitkenhead, Purdon, Buick, Fairweather, Todd, Moresby.

This is his WWI draft registration card.  It is just a registration, it doesn't necessarily mean that he actually enlisted or served in the army.

I think James may have died on 14 May 1921 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  See page 11 [soundex code 325] of this document:

Hi Erato.
Many thanks for all your effort! The Adobe PDF took 5 minutes to download 11.25MB!!
That would be him, so my US quest is over.
Emily Kate Aitkenhead, 1855 - 1943 would have to be the mother of James and wife of William.
I have an Emily Kate Aitkenhead registered in Dade County, Florida Census of 1935, aged 80, so if it is the same one, she had a good long life. Thanks again!

In the Andrews Newspaper Index Cards of England, there is a newspaper ad from a solicitor looking for the family of William Aitkenhead and Emily nee Harrison, believed to have lived near Pittsburgh.

Looking at James' death certificate (which was mistranscribed as Artkenhead), it says he was widowed, died of "general paralysis of the insane" and paretic convulsions, and was buried at Uniondale cemetery.

There is a mention of William winning an amateur race here:  http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84024546/1890-09-02/ed-1/seq-2.pdf

A mention of William's death in the Stone Cutter's Journal:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01btq/

William's death certificate is here in case you haven't seen it:  http://seekingmichigan.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p129401coll7/id/887661/rec/1

Hi Shellyesq.
Thank you for that information. Nice to tidy up and fill in all the loose ends. Is there any chance to look at the death certificate of James? Regards.
