Dumfries Carsons
« on: Monday 03 March 14 17:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking to clearly identify whether James Carson who according to the 1851 Scottish census was born in Kelton about 1843 is the same person who appears to marry Mary Campbell Watson in 1865 in West Derby and died in West Derby in 1877 aged 33 years old.

According to his daughter Jessie Hope Carson's death record on 17 Feb 1883, James was a shipping clerk (deceased).

Long shot but worth a try

Hi

Kelton is in Kirkcudbrightshire - not Dumfries

The only 1851 entry for that name b Kelton was b 1849 parents James occ slater - and Mary

What is the name of his father on the 1865 marriage cert?

Does the 1871 entry show his birthplace as Scotland

Hi Carole,

All the information I have is what you've already read. I have no additional information on James that can help. I'm really clutching at straws without the resources to buy a marriage or death certificate and gain additional information from those.

I should add that presently I can't locate a census return for him after 1851. I had hoped to find either him or Mary and Agnes on the 1871 but I can't trace either of them on the census until I find Mary with a family in the 1881 in Scotland where she returns to Dumfries.

Hi Reiver
There appears to be a James Carson, born at Kelton (in Kirkcudbrightshire, as Carole says) to William Carson and Janet Geddes and baptised on 24 Nov 1844. The marriage cert should help to clarify who the father is.

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk shows it as "registry office or registrar attended" so it cannot be looked up in parish records - you would have to buy a copy.

Possibly putting a spanner in the works

There is an 1863 marriage in Liverpool between James Carson and Sarah Voce.  The 1871 entry shows he was b Scotland 1842 and was living in the West Derby RD.  Have to go now so haven't been able to check 1881 census to see if he's still alive - he may be the 1877 death

Yeah that's one monkey wrench I avoided some time ago.
