SUTTON,Richard
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 04:56 BST (UK) »
Folks,
My great grandfather was born 1824,Scaleby,Cumberland and died 1882,Colac,Victoria.His death certificate states he has been in the colony for 32 years, search at PROV and shipping lists in NSW resources here have drawn a blank. It is suggested that he travelled with James Steadman Farrer b 1829,Kirklinton,Cumberland,with a mob of sheep. The connection between the men seems to be confirmed with Farrer being appointed to Petty Sessions at Colac, then in 1851 Sutton is appointed poundkeeper at Colac by Farrer.Searched Trove,no sign of arrival, sale of sheep or a partnership.
Were some ships for cargo only?If so,where was their arrival recorded?
Any suggestions?

Before the Trove digitised newspapers, there was the pdf images available online for the 1840s and into early 1850s.    These are still available, and of course were 'pdf'ed in an earlier internet era, so are ummmmmm  not keyword searchable.   But there's loads of newspapers there, and some of these were full of shipping info, colonial news, and of course overseas news.   http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/browselist.html

Fingers crossed that you have patience to work through these.

Have you considered searching for James Steadman FARRER and his arrival, or checking his death cert for likely year of arrival to the Colonies, although of course that may not provide sufficient info to help confirm or eliminate the possibility they came together, or as associates.   But arrival prior to Gold Rushes seems to be a sensible thought as Gold fever cannot occur until the discovery of Gold is promoted, and this dates from 1851.   For a dc to say 32 years, that seems to be saying the informant was of the understanding that Richard SUTTON arrived before Gold Fever was the cause of so many migrants arriving in the colonies.   Of course, I am simply speculating, so I may be quite wrong in my speculative thoughts about 1882-32 = 1850.

Cheers,  JM

What do you mean,  "appointed to petty sessions" ?   It seems a strange combination, being hired as a shepherd and then appointed as a clerk with the power to appoint other cronies.  Or did he own the sheep ?

With the prospect of an export meat trade,  there seems to have been a flurry on interest during that period,  at importing more breeding stock.  I have several connections who arrived in the role of escorting imported livestock.

I think that you will find every ship arrival at major ports being mentioned in a newspaper somewhere.

Is 32 years before 1882,  your only estimate of when they arrived ?

Just a thought - have you checked the South Australian passenger arrivals - lots of people came in and travelled overland from South Australia.

If I knew how to access them I'd do it myself.  but searching is not my strong suit.   ;)

There is a Richard Sutton on the list of electors for the Port Philip district published in the Argus of 3 July 1849.

Your JS Farrer was appointedclerk of petty sessions by E Deas Thompson,  which may make it before the separation of Victoria.

Your JS Farrer died in 1910 and his wife in 1916, one of hissons was an MLA.

Someone at Trove has gone and labelled the places where JS Farrer is mentioned, but they didn't find all of them.
