the newhouse west Lothian
« on: Sunday 23 March 14 19:45 GMT (UK) »
I have a BC on which is written the following
"Children's names baptized at the New House at Whitburn before the erection in the year 1731 and at the church erected there afterward. The following register to the 8th of Jully, 1733  was found in a small schedule and  inserted by appointment of the session of Whitburn"  I found mention of newhouse as a hamlet but I was wondering if it could also be a religious house before a church was established???

"New House" I think refers to the chapel of ease which was established in 1718, At this time Whitburn was in the parish of Livingstone/Livingston (modern spelling) the church of which was some distance away. In 1730 Whitburn became a parish in its own right.
