1861 Census - Woodstock
« on: Tuesday 11 February 14 19:00 GMT (UK) »
Evening All

Could anyone tell me if there is a problem with finding Woodstock in the 1861 census please?
When trying to do a search in County - Oxfordshire - and then Civil Parish - Woodstock - nothing comes up! Does Woodstock appear under another Civil Parish?

Would be pleased to hear your thoughts, thank you

Cheers
Erika :)

Can you find the entry you are looking for if you omit Woodstock from the search?  Sometime less info gets better results

Hi Carole
Thank you
I have tried with just the name of the person and Oxfordshire but nothing comes up in Woodstock at all.
I have the name in all censuses from 1841,  to 1881 in Woodstock but nothing appears for 1861

I have looked for Woodstock in the Civil Parish list but it isn't there at all :-\

Bit of a mystery

Thanks
Cheers

I have the same problem ::)
The Woodstock 1861 pages (among others) were lost years ago and weren't transcribed, so you won't find them anywhere.  Nothing anyone can do about it, I'm afraid :(

Many thanks Carol, at least now I know I wasn't going completely mad not finding Woodstock!

What a shame though, so many people will have lost families because that census is missing.

Cheers

Yes Erika, it's a pity they hadn't invented photocopiers by 1861 :D

Luckily for me, my direct line had left Woodstock by then and I do have the OFHS PR transcripts which are a great help.  Do you need any look-ups?

Thank you for your kind offer of lookups :)

I am trying to sort out a family called Haynes, very common name unfortunately, especially with christian names of William, Sarah and Mary ::)

I have just sent for a couple of birth certs so I can find out mother's maiden name.
If I could get back to you when I've sorted out a few more details, your help may come in handy. I'll pm you.

Many thanks
Erika :)

Hi Erica
I know what you are going through, my family come from Wolvercote which is in the Woodstock census area.
What is the name you are looking for? I have got a lot of stuff from where I have tried to fill in the gaps for my family.
If your ancestors were naughty or just poor I might have something and if I know their name I'll have a look.

Hi Borri

Thank you for your interest.
The family I'm looking for are Haynes. However their christian names are very common, William, Mary, Ann, Sarah.
I also have a Joseph who is the innkeeper at The Kings Arms in later census. He is the one who seems to be in Woodstock most of the time. However he married in London in 1854, but was back in Woodstock when his daughter was born in 1856.
I am waiting for some certificates to arrive, so may have some clues from them ;)

I have found some baptisms at Forest Hill, which I think could be the same family, but really need some definite proof.

Thanks for your offer
Cheers
