What did it mean when they put Furner after his name?

Hi,

Furner might be the surname he had at birth or possibly when baptised or at some point was known as.

It is possible that he was born before his parents married and his mothers surname was Furner.
I noticed that there were several people with the name Browne Furner in Canterbury when I was looking earlier. I didn't have time to search more as I had to go out. It might be helpful to try and find a marriage for James senior (the shoemaker) to see if his wife has Furner as her maiden name.
