Hello,

you will need to get his marriage certificate to check his father's name.

There was a death registered in Durham Central District for a Lawrence Heaton, aged approx 74, in Q4 1964.

There is also an entry in the Probate Calendar for him which gives the following detail:
Heaton Lawrence of 1 Railway Cottages Shincliffe Village county Durham died 2 October 1964 at Shincliffe Village. Administration Durham 15 July 1965 to Dennis Heaton of no occupation £156.

If any of that rings any bells with your friend or her father then there is a birth registered Q2 1890 for a 'Laurence' Heaton in Helmsley District which looks promising.

I gave that birth as an alternative in reply 5 for Jaime to consider. ;)

It looks most promising as we both agree but it would be good to have official confirmation through a certificate.

If that is all they know, then they should start from what they are certain of - that is the marriage of Lawrence and Frances.
The certificate will give them the fathers' names of the couple and they can proceed from there.

As we have discovered, there was probably a wrong assumption initially and you don't want to end up with the wrong information and family.

The latest one found looks really good from the birth/death dates but it is still not definite.

The way out of Helmsley is through the certificate. ;)

Helmsley was not mentioned initially- that was Dewsbury.
