Census 1861
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hello

I would be grateful if someone could have a look for a family on the 1861 census.

Male John Otter (full name was Charles John Otter, but seemed to go by John) born ?
Female Mary Otter (nee Edwards) born 1834
Married 1853.

I am looking for them on the 1861 census.  By this point they would have had at least two children Charles 1856, and Mary 1858.

I am registered on a site but can't find it, and think it might have been transcribed incorrectly.  But I can find them on another site (which I am not a subscriber too!), but I obviously can't see the full record. :(

Any help would be appreciated, birth year, occupations, other children etc..

Many Thanks

If they were all born in Broadway, Dorset, then young Charles is named as John Charles Otter, living with his grandparents, Charles and Mary Edwards, on 1861?

Class: RG09; Piece: 1348; Folio: 31A; Page: 12

John and Mary are at the bottom of the same page!

And John and Mary Otter are living a couple of doors down from Charles and Mary.

John is described as a carpenter and methodist preacher.

Children are with the Edwards grandparents in 1871 too.

(John) Charles was not the eldest child.  There was a Clara Cicely Otter baptised 11 June 1854 Broadway to John (carpenter) and Mary, of Broadway.

You say his full name was Charles John Otter, but he was John at marriage (father also John) and John in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses.  Can't see where Charles comes into it.

Born abt 1834 Broadway.  See 1851 census for Jno Otter 17 in Broadway with parents Jno and Jane.
