Hi its_never_worth_it

I've just found some (fairly recent) CARMICHAEL family "discussion" in another forum (possibly the same researcher who started this this thread ? )    There are some linked comments (13 of) in that forum to which there has been a reply from somebody who apparently has a book on the CARMICHAEL / BIGGS line.  ;)

Here's the link >

See the thread entitled > LAMB / CARMICHAEL (13 comments)

Maybe try joining in that forum and contacting the person who has the book ?

Hello again

.... just skimming back through this thread, I can see that our recommendation to the original poster ("spacecookie") has been that more progress on the CARMICHAEL roots, will very probably be had by purchasing the "printout" of the 1884 NZ marriage record of William CARMICHAEL and Isabella BIGGS.  :)

Born 1859-ish so maybe worth tracing further.

Hi again...

Just following my own advice, this is possibly the death of the mother Helen CARMICHAEL

Auckland Star, 1 August 1876, Page 2
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0wz6/

Her husband is a John and the "On Saturday last" ties in with the following listing on BDM NZ Deaths

1876/4609 - CARMICHAEL, Helen - 49 years - d.o.d 29 July 1876 so born c.1827

-----

Noticed on the passenger list that the passengers were part of the Waikato Immigration scheme which might tie in with the 1884 marriage notice saying William came from Cambridge, Waikato. Might not.

Hi, i had some further info from another very helpful Carmichael researcher and she had got a printout of William Carmichaels marriage. It states on that that his father was John Carmichael (Dundee). and his mother Helen or Ellen Cooper. William was 25 at his marriage which would put him born approx 1868. So it sound right that the John and Helen,James and William that came out on the "Viola" are the right ones. Also have William and Isabella are listed with the Duke of Cambridge Lodge,Cambridge.William at his marriage place of residence is Cambridge. So getting further on, thank you.

Hi again

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0x2k/[/url

Speaking of speculation, I was looking through the 1861 Scottish census trying to find the CARMICHAEL family who came over in the Viola. I'm just guessing they're Scottish as the Viola left from Glasgow.

Viola - 1865

Nothing really jumped out but there is a John CARMICHAEL (occupation slater) and his wife Helen (slater's wife). They have a ten year old son James and a three year old by the name of William DAWSON living with them.

A slater is similar-ish to a bricklayer. And the "James - 13 months old" on the transcribed passenger list may actually read "James - 13 years old" on the as yet unseen original passenger list.

Just speculating :-)

Hi there, thank you for all this info. i posted a query on the Scotland site and yes it does look like this is the same family.Another Carmichael relation/ researcher that has posted on this site has got a printout for the marriage of William and Isabella and states father John Carmichael occ Slater and mother Helen nee Couper/Cooper. We think the William Dawson on the 61 census living with John and Helen and James, as a boarder is probably our William Carmichael. Why or how he is there we are still trying to find out. They also had 2 other sons who died as infants. It looks like they 'aquired' William Dawson about the same time as the death of the second son.(1857/59.  I guess he was brought up when they came here as Carmichael and may never have known any different, we don't know.      I was wondering if it would be possible to trace the other son James Carmichael that came here too. Until we started asking about William i had no idea he even existed. He was 13yrs old when he came here with the family. thanks for your help with all this.
