Robert MCKAY and Harriet Gibson GRIEVE
« on: Tuesday 11 February 14 03:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys.. I'm new to this, my first post.
I too am looking for the history of a Robert McKay my GG G/father .
He is listed as the father of Jemima Eliza (my G G/Mother) married Christchurch New Zealand 10 May 1894
Jemima's mother is Harriet McKay (nee Grieves ) who I have found on the passenger list "RAMSEY"
arrived NZ 1870, aged 19
I have found a Robert McKay on the passenger list "Brothers Pride" arrived NZ 1863 with wife Elizabeth & son Walter in Christchurch in 1863
It would all fit if Robert left Elizabeth and remarried Harriet ....maybe I can make a link, the dates fit.

Anyway probably not your Robert, but if see a connection please let me know ..a long shot I know.
Bob

Hi Bob

... and welcome to RootsChat.   :)

Mmm ... probably this is a different Robert McKAY in this particular thread, but will have a look to see if we can find any information for your man of the same name.

Hi Bob, and welcome. :)

Robert MACKAY married Harriet G. GRIEVE in 1871.

Any idea what the 'G' was for?

It might be best to split off your post and subsequent replies from this topic and create a new one if that's OK with you. It will mean a more focused response to your search.

I'll wait for you to reply first though. ;)

Thanks Spades
I have a transcript of Jemima's marriage certificate of 10 nay 1894 issued in NZ
Jemima's  mother's maiden name listed as Harriet Gibson McKay (nee Grieves)
I will split the search as you suggested.

Cheers

Hi again Bob,

The name Robert MCKAY is common enough to suggest that the man of that name on the 1863 sailing of the Brother's Pride may be a different individual. Unless you are quite sure it's him I think you should look further afield for the moment.

At what port did the Ramsey arrive in 1870?

Do you know where in New Zealand Robert and Harriet married in 1871? And do you have their Intention to Marry Notice?

Do you know what country Robert hailed from? From the name he could be either Scottish or English.

Does the 1894 marriage certificate provide any more information about him beyond his name? His occupation, for instance?
