William Jones (sorry for the common Welsh name) was my gt gt grand uncle.  He was born in Llangwnadl, Caernarfonshire, in March 1831.  He got a mariner's ticket at Beaumaris Anglesey in April 1853.  I have a copy of a letter he wrote on April 17th 1864 to his sister, my gt gt grandmother.  He wrote from Portchalmers near Dunedin, describing the terrible conditions at the "diggins" the previous winter, "sgors been frees to death".  "I have stong intencion to come home soon, this place is not fit to be liven in tents the wethere is to severe".
As far as I know, he never returned.  Can he be found in any NZ records? Thanks

Hi gwencymru

Did William have a middle name?

There are a few William Jones deaths within a year or two of the correct age
