On Holidays in New Zealand
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 23:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have come across some old postcards that have my relative - Violet Emma Chamberlain in New Zealand in 1893 (at the age of 16) and in 1910.
What I know about Violet
Born 1877 - NSW, Australia (parents Richard and Charlotte0
Had a baby in 1897 in NSW, Australia (Roy)
Baby Died in Nsw Australia in 1904
Married in 1914 Nsw Australia (Harry James Roberts)
Died in 1916, Nsw Australia.
I am hoping to find some passenger lists with her on them in hope to see if she went to New Zealand by herself or with someone else
Could someone tell me if there are passenger lists that cover these dates.
Cheers
Meggles

Hi Meggles

Unfortunately there are no "organised" passenger lists for trans-Tasman travel - apart from those from VIC (at PROV website) ... and at the FamSearch link given by Twiggy.
Sometimes (if you're lucky) passenger names can found in NZ newspaper shipping lists, but often only the cabin or saloon passengers are mentioned in these.

*  Did the postcards give any clues as to where in New Zealand, Violet Emma might have visited ?

Hi Meggles,

On the off-chance that she might have taken a ship to New Zealand whose voyage originated from the UK, have you tried FindmyPast? www.findmypast.co.uk/

Hi again Meggles

If you search on the FamilySearch link "NZ Immigration Passenger Lists" > using "Chamberlain" and (years) "1911-1911", you'll find a manifest for the ship "Moana" departing Wellington on 10* June 1911.  [It actually left Wellington on 9 June, bound for Sydney.]   There is a "Miss CHAMBERLAIN" (no age) underneath the listing of a Mr and Mrs Callaghan + 2 chn.

Additionally there is a passenger list (@ ancestry) for same voyage of the "Moana" - this time it is the "Incoming list to Sydney" (as distinct from the manifest drawn up at Wellington on departure).
On this particular list the passenger CHAMBERLAIN is recorded as "Miss V. CHAMBERLAIN" (but unfortunately there is no age given for her.)

Despite looking at shipping lists in NZ newspapers around the time of departure of the "Moana" (9 June 1911) from the port of Wellington, the only passengers mentioned were those travelling in cabin or saloon (- steerage passengers not listed.)

...oops ... I was assuming that Violet Emma probably made the voyage from AUS (Sydney perhaps?) to NZ ???

Can you clarify please, Meggles ?

Hi Meggles

Maybe also search on TROVE for passenger lists to and from NZ ?

As an example, the "Moana" made regular trips between various AUS and NZ ports.   In late-ish May 1911 "she" looks to have come from Dunedin NZ onto Melbourne and then with a very quick turnaround, headed back to the NZ southern ports of Bluff and Dunedin - via Hobart (which "she" apparently departed from on 31 May.   After clearing the southern ports she arrived at Wellington 9 June and went onward to Sydney.]

Sorry, haven't time to search TROVE, but I see there are numerous mentions of trans-Tasman shipping - lots "mail notices"  (not helpful  :D) ... and some passenger lists.

Hi Lu
Thank you, it is possible the 1911 V.Chamberlain is Violet coming back to Sydney.
I have 2 postcards  - one in 1893 and the other in 1910 (i am at work at the moment and can't remember the exact dates) but if she was in New Zealand in 1910 then it is quite possible that she come back in 1911.
The postcards were sent from Auckland both times (1893 and 1910) and I am seraching for relatives I guess that she could of been staying with.  There is a second cousin of hers that maybe she went (again I need to look at my research to see where they were living)
I will give Trove ago as well.   I had a look at family serach and got a bit lost in it all - thank you for showing me how to search, I had not been sure how to narrow it down.
I will follow up on a few of your leads.
cheers
