Flo Baker
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 19:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi all I am searching for any info on a Flo ( Florence ?) Baker, who was living in the Church Street area of Shirley, Southampton in the late 1960's.
This lady wrote my mother a lovely letter when my father died in 1968, but although she signed herself cousin Flo, Mother didn't know who she was.
Any thoughts or knowledge would be invaluable

You say "in the Church St area"  Is Church St shown as the address on the letter?  If so - you could check the electoral registers from 1968 for her address to see who else was living there

Shirley comes under the Southampton registration district and there are 13 deaths after 1968 for a Florence Baker - although all except one had other christian names either before or after Florence

Only 10 had their first name as Florence

The problem is somebody can be known to the family by any one of their christian names so without more info it would be impossible to identify the correct Florence after such a long time

Southampton Street directories for the 1960, 1964 and 1970 are online

http://www.plimsoll.org/Southampton/streetdirectories/

You can browse by surname or street name.

Only the head of the household is listed and if it's a lady they are often listed as just Miss or Mrs. So you may or may not find you're Flo.

Another approach would be to research all the cousins of both your mum and dad, and see if indeed, for example,  maybe Dad had a cousin called Florence whom your mum had never come across, who married a Mr Baker?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks all some useful guidance, the Southampton street directory helped prove a name and residence and checking half brothers and sisters from a previous generation has I think provided a solution. Thanks all once again :)
