Charles Edward Walker - Hampshire/Winchester
« on: Friday 14 November 14 03:29 GMT (UK) »
I've been stuck on this branch of my family tree for years.

My Grandfather Charles WALKER was born Nov 1870 and notes his birthplace as Winchester.
His Father was Charles Edward WALKER occupation Farmer. I assume that makes him born c1845

I don't have a mothers name

I do know that by 1890s Charles Walker (jn) was living in Western Australia.

I can't find a plain Charles Walker birth registered in Hampshire in 1870/1871

I think you might have to purchase the birth certificate for Charles Walker b 1870 Winchester to confirm his parentage.

thanks, but when I tried the Hampshire Registry before they had no record of him, that's why I thought I'd try finding his father in that area instead and try and work from there instead.

I took a guess at his fathers birth year, alllowing a 25yr gap.

I'm not sure when in the year censuses are taken, but Charles (jn) would have only been months old in the 1871 roll.

Have you got any information on when he arrived in Australia?

If he claims not to know his mother's name, sounds very fishy, or she died when he was born?

The only Charles Edward Walker in the 1871 census is in Portsea Hampshire aged 27, with a wife Mary aged 26, but he is a painter and both were born in Portsea.

All I know is he was in Aus by 1896, and yes I didn't know what to make of him not knowing his mothers name either.. I presumed she died at birth too.  :-[

Hi 'Aussie'

Are you aware that Winchester was a garrison town?

I'm planning to undertake some 'lateral' research in an attempt to locate marriages/baptisms in the likely timescale in the Garrison Chapel and/or St Thomas Winchester PRs as I’ve spotted a couple of WALKER children  whose birth registrations in the 1860s were in the Winchester Reg District but do not subsequently surface with parents although both survived to adulthood and evidently had military links.

Do you have any naming patterns for the WALKER descendants?  Are you willing to divulge , if only via PM, any pertinent details from Charles’ service record?

No I didn't know that about Winchester,

My paternal grandparents where long pasted by the time I came along,

Family legend had it my grandfather also served in the army in India before coming to Aus, but there is nothing in his Aus service records to indicate that.

His Aus service records do not contain parents names as he was late 40s and married at the time WW1.

The name Charles is the only common name I know off.. My Great Grandfather being Charles Edward Walker, Grandfather Charles (possible Arthur) Walker, My Uncle Charles Christopher Walker, and my brother David Charles Walker. (all deceased)
