Leyswood near Groombridge
« on: Thursday 09 January 14 16:36 GMT (UK) »
Im researching the residents of the Leyswood Estate near Groombridge. Leyswood House was built in 1868 to the design of architect Richard Norman Shaw in 1868 in some 2,300 acres of land. I have all the information I need about the residents up to the death of Anne Hewlett Temple in 1919, wife of the original owner James William Temple. The next record I have is for John Christoforides, a Cypriot tobacco merchant from Macedonia, with his wife Mildred and children. Mildred died at Leyswood in 1924. Im not sure if the Chritoforides family moved into Leyswood right after the death of Mrs Temple or not and I want to find out when the Christoforides left Leyswood.

The next record I have is that Leyswood was used as a training school during WW II .

I also have a record of the artist Sir Walter Thomas Monnington there but directories indicate that he was living at Leyswood Cottage and not the main mansion house. He was there in the 1940's and up to about 1957.

My question is what are the names of the residents of Leyswood House,Leyswood Lodge and Leyswood Cottage  from 1919 to 1950

Hi there,
I have just noticed you are researching Leyswood in Groombridge and am curious to know the reason for your interest.  I, too have made some studies into Leyswood as I have a personal interest, my grandparents having lived there in the twenties and my late mother and her siblings spent their early years in the house.

If you would like to make further contact I would be interested to hear from you.
Regards,
Rosie.

Hello Smokey,

I have more information to relate which you may find more interesting than helpful but would prefer to use the privacy setting but I see that is not a possibility at present!  However, I wonder if you know that the daughter of Mr. Christoforides was Maria Anastasia who married Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook.
I will be happy to share my family connection with Leyswood soon and am interested in the fact that you are writing a book on this lovely house.

Regards,
Rosie.

Hello Smokey,

Will do!  I realised afterwards it is an article you are writing, not a book!

I'll make contact again soon.

Bye for now.
Rosie.
