Margaret Peterkin
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Has anybody know anything about Margaret Peterkin born in Kirkwall on 13th July 1836.  I know that she married David Peden from Prestonpans but can find nothing for either of them.
Thanks
Carol

Hi Carol

Welcome to Rootschat  :D And Seasons Greetings !

When you say you can find nothing for either of them...what do you have of the following ( so we don't spend time looking for & typing out what you may have):
births/baptisms
parents names
census pre-marriage
marriage record (cert if it occurred 1855>)
census post-marriage
issue, names & dates
death
etc

A quick search looks like her parents:

Hi and welcome to Rootschat  :)

There's a tree on Ancestry that suggests that she married a Joseph Shillinglaw on 28 August 1860 in St George, Edinburgh

This also shows on the IGI

Same parents as you've found, Ambly

Died 1908, Edinburgh

The  census information seems to support this information with Margaret b. Kirkwall circa 1836. In 1861, an 18 year old Elizabeth Peterkin is living with them

There are possible marriages showing on the IGI for a David Peden

* to a Janet Taylor in Tranent, East Lothian on 18 April 1856
* to a Margaret Hogg in Tranent on 1  Nov 1850
* to a Janet Sharpe in in Tranent on 17 Oct 1853

Tranent is not far from Prestonpans. Could there have been some mix up with the information  :-\

I think that this  looks like the David Peden from Prestonpans - I don't see any others b. Prestonpans

1861

Morton Cottage, Tranent
722 12 73

David Peden, 40, Engine man employing 1 m, b. Prestonpans
Janet, w, 31, b. Aberlady, Haddingtonshire
Jane, d, 8
James, s, 4
Thos, s, 2
Children all born Tranent

Could you tell us where you found the information about Margaret marrying David, please? It seems to not be backed up by the other info that I've found   :-\

Ah - maybe this is where the confusion lies - a Margaret. I think that this is David Peden and maybe Margaret Hogg, (married 1850)

1851
Colliers Close, Tranent
David Peden, 32, engineer, b. Prestonpans
Margaret, w, 32, b. Dunbar
Margaret, d, 8 mths, b. Tranent
James Donaldson, nephew, 11, b. Tranent

It would seem that it's the same David as on the 1861 with Janet.
There's a burial of a Margaret Peden, Prestonpans, 15 Dec 1851.

Thank you all for your replies.

You have push me in the direction of some descendants of Margaret Peterkin on her mothers side but I can find nothing on her father John Peterkin b 1805 in McDuff.

Does anyone know of a site I could use that will give me the information I am seeking.

Why can't people keep to the name they born with, it would make things sooo much easier.
