Looking for Catherine Sinclair
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 20:21 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a Catherine Sinclair, this is the only info I have for her.
Born in Caradale, Saddell, Argyllshire
She was married to Captain Archibald Taylor b. 1795 in Saddell and Skipness, on the 26 February 1825 in Saltcoats.
Archie died in 1857 in Saltcoats. They had 6 children.
Can anyone help with birth dates for Catherine?
Thanks
Taylor of Saltcoats Scotland. van Wyk South Africa, van Niekerk, Dickason, Rogers , Stevely and Seagrey

Catherine Sinclair born at Caradale, Saddell, Argyllshire was given to me my a distant relative. But she did not know any more.

The Catherine Sinclair I had  was born in 1801 at Kilkerrie Argyllshire according to the census of 1841.
I was told by set relative it was the incorrect Catherine.

So which Catherine is correct?

Hi Karytay,

Could this be Catherine with Archibald and children on the 1841 Census -

Parish of Stevenson  Address - Quay Street, Saltcoats.

Archibald  Taylor    45       Merchant Seaman   born Outside Census County
Catherine Taylor     40                                   born Outside Census County
Archibald Taylor     14   Merchant Seaman Apprentice   born Ayrshire
Elizabeth Taylor     10                                                     "
Annabella Taylor      8                                                     "
Peter Taylor            6                                                      "
Duncan Taylor        4                                                      "
Margaret Taylor      2                                                       "
Margaret Sinclair     25     Female Servant        born Outside Census County
Grace Stalchar        10                                   born Outside Census County,

Ages on the 1841 Census can be a bit unreliable (especially for adults) . Enumerators were told to round down ages of anyone over 15 to the nearest 0 or 5. So Catherine above could be any age between 40 - 44  if she was honest about her age in the first place :)

No relationships are recorded on the 1841 so we can only surmise that this is a married couple with their 6 children. Margaret Sinclair could be a sister of Catherine?? And the child Grace - well no clue -maybe Margaret Sinclair's daughter?? But that's a guess.

Looby :)

Hi looby
yes that's the one I found.
So now how do I go about finding more about her?
So she could of been born between 1801 and 1797

You mention that Archibald Taylor dies in 1857 in Saltcoats. So you have that death certificate, or have you viewed the death record on Scotlands People. Depending on who the informant was and how much they knew that should mention whether Archibald was married/single or widowed, it should also have his wife's name. If Archibald is a widower at time of death , well you have a timeframe to search for her death.
To be honest I'm having a hard job locating the family on the 1851 Census :-\. I've found one or two contenders for the children but nothing that can definitely connect to the family on 1841. Naturally Archibalds snr and jnr could have been at sea at Census time as could the two younger sons.

But finding out Archibald's marital status at the time of death is a good start. Also who registered his death?

Yes Catherine's year of birth could be between 1797 and 1801, if she or the person who gave the information to the enumerator gave the correct age in the first place!

Looby :)

When you say found this , what have you actually found and where did you find it?
There are a few Catherine Sinclairs being born 1790/1810 in Argyll
Have you looked at originals and not transcriptions?

Thanks Karytay for Personal message with Archibald's death certificate.
So the bad news is Archibald was a widower when he died.
First box reads Taylor (Duncan scored out and replaced with) Archibald
Formerly Shipsmaster.
(Widower)

He died 8th August 1857  6.50 am  at Hamilton Street Saltcoats age 63
Father - Duncan Taylor , Shoemaker? deceased
Mother - Anna Taylor, maiden name Campbell Deceased.

I can't quite decipher cause of death yet, or where buried.

The informant was Margaret Sinclair - sister-in-law Present (ie. she was present at death.)
The record is then signed by Charles Marshall ? the registrar.

So Catherine Sinclair/Taylor is dead by 1857. :(

Looby :)

Added Margaret Sinclair has put her cross (mark) to the record. She was not able to write her name.
