Before 1845 you need to consult Parish Records. Without the name of a Townland, Parish or Town you're stumped.

If David had any relatives you know of, it might be worth tracing their Census returns to see if they left a more accurate account of where the family came from.

i checked the census's i could find but they all just say ireland,

Hello Herbie,It may be worth having a look at local newspapers for the Durham area to see if the family had an obituary published to record his death, sometimes people record key  information in them such as place of birth.
Also if you consult older relatives these may be able to shed some light.
         Good luck Diarmuid.

The Duff name, as you most likely know, came originally from Dubh (pron. Dove), a term used to described a dark haired person. It arose in many separate areas and is pretty well distributed throughout.

The Irish Times shows it is widespread along the east coast with a somewhat heavier presence in the north of the country.

Herbie looking at this site http://www.irish-roots.ie/pay-per-view.asp the vast majority of the Duffs are located around Dublin, Meath and Wicklow in the 1830s. There is however no David showing in the records with a father Patrick. Are you sure you've got the correct first name?
