Cochelard McAllister (completed).
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 16:03 BST (UK) »
Firstly can anyone tell me if Cochelard is an actual girls name ? She is shown on the 1871 Scottish Census as being the daughter of John McAllister & Jane McAllister nee Reilly. Living in Glasgow she is 13 years old & working as a Collier. As women & children were banned from working down a pit from around 1842 what would her work as a Collier entail ? Would it be moving the coal wagons to be emptied for example ? Many thanks for any thoughts on this.  Graham.

Cochelard is a French surname, so maybe there were connections to France and they decided to use it to name a child.

Is this from a transcription or the actual census image?

It is actually Archibald Mcallister,(son) on FindMyPast. The Ancestry transcription is wrong

Thanks Craclyn & stanmapstone for your replys. Bad enough getting the name wrong in a transcripition, but getting the sex wrong as well is a bit much. The Collier occupation makes more sense now. Cheers , Graham.
