1901 census address Penrhyn
« on: Wednesday 17 August 11 16:44 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find or suggest an equivalent in the 1901 census for an address given on a 1902 Conway marriage certificate:-

14 Lower Penrhyn,Penrhyn

(I assume this is a Llandrillo yn Rhos address)?

I would prefer a view based on the address alone.I have my own idea but I would like an independent view.

An address search on the 1901 census for Lower Penrhyn gives nothing.
A search with just Penrhyn gives a variety of places and one "other establishments".
Looking down this list gives 14 Quarry Cottages, Lower Penrhyn and although there are 1 or 2 others with Lower Penrhyn in the address, this is the only one with no. 14 in it.

Hello Roger

This is probably the wrong one as this couple are already married.

14 Quarry Cottages, Penrhyn, Conway.
William Counsell. age 29. Limestone quarry labourer. Born Bolton by Bowland, Yorkshire.
Annie (wife). age 26. Born Hollington, Staffordshire.
William (son). age 5. Born Ackworth, Yorkshire.
Ethel (daughter). age 3.            ditto
George (son). age 1. Born Weatherfield, Yorkshire.
Bartholomew Walters (boarder). age 32 married. Limestone Quarryman. Born Flint.

Some of the addresses for Quarry Cottages say Lower Penrhyn.
By 1911 no. 14 had gone.

If this doesn't help, perhaps it might be found with the person's name.

Mike

Thanks for the listing(I had wrongly assumed the whole area was  in Llandrillo yn Rhos civil parish).
While I don't think the occupants are connected it is important to eliminate it and it gives a larger geographical area to search for connections- so thanks again.

While it is not obvious because of lack of numbering my candidate from a family name connection(Jones) is in the Penrhyn View/Ty'n/Rhewl area.

Regards
Roger

Hello Roger

Not a Jones, but found this in 1901:

Tyn Rhewl, Penrhyn.

WILLIAMS, Ellen  Head  Widow  70 Farmer, Denbigh, Denbighshire
WILLIAMS, Isaac Son    Single 20  Plasterer, Denbigh, Carnarvonshire
WILLIAMS, George Son Single 28  Farmer On Farm, Denbigh, Carnarvonshire
WILLIAMS, Margaret E Daughter    Single 25 Denbigh, Carnarvonshire

There is nothing listed for Penrhyn View in 1891, 1901 or 1911.

Thanks again but I don't think these people fit.
A map of the area in 1901(www.old-maps.co.uk) shows perhaps three clusters of buildings that might qualify to hhave a number 14 :
1.The Quarry cottages as listed.
2."Penrhyn Bay"-these are next to Penrhyn Isaf farm, which I think means lower Penrhyn, but are probably listed as Morfa cottages, which again from my limited knowledge of Welsh, is appropriate, but only goes up to 8 as listed.
3.Penrhyn view. This area contains a widow called Sarah Jones who fits the profile I am looking for,as the Margaret Jones(prime subject of interest) married in 1902 has her father John Jones described as deceased(builder and contractor),and it is believed one of Margaret's children eventually went to stay with a"grandmother in Liverpool"
If I trace Sarah Jones correctly she does return to live with a son there, but she married a Thomas Jones and try as I might I can't make him John Thomas Jones.Perhaps I have made too many tenuous links.

I live in this area and can confirm that Lower Penrhyn was what is now called Penrhyn Bay.   Quarry cottages were built between 1894 & 1900 on what is now Maesgwyn Road for workers at the nearby Little Orme limestone quarry.       There were 16 in all and they are still there.  (They can be seen on Google Earth).  I dont know where Penrhyn View was but Tyn Rhewl was a farm near the Little Orme which was demolished in the 1970s.   Hope this helps.      Gwynd

Thanks for the info-not sure yet where it all fits in(if at all)
I think there are two Ty'n Rhewls in the area and I've now found A Rhiw Bank Terrace that has 1 to 14 numbering, but no one here fits the bill.
