Caroline Mary Bear b.1870
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 03:55 BST (UK) »
Goodmorning everyone
I have a Caroline Mary Bear born Dec. qtr. of 1870 in Hackney, parents Robert and Sarah Bear.
In 1871 Caroline lives with her mother and siblings in Essex st, Shenfield Essex, father is at work. 1881 Caroline aged 10 is living at Woodman rd, Great Warley with mother and siblings, again father father Robert is at work, he was an attendant at Essex County Lunatic asylum.
Then Caroline has disappeared. I have tried using various forms/spellings of her name in census, marriages etc., and got no where, please can you help?
I have traced and have the information on the rest of the family but this young lady has me beat.

If you can help it would be most appreciated, maybe fresh eyes ( or stronger glasses in my case) would help.

Have a nice  day all :)

Unfortunately her father didnt seem to leave a will, otnerwise that might have given some clues about his family.

Thank you  lizdb,

Robert Charles was Carolines eldest brother, Herbert Charles his son.
What a mystery this young lady is.

Sorry, it was a generation out then! It was the Woodman Rd address that caught my eye.

I appreciated your taking an interest, all these Robert's confuse me at times as the name runs through the family.

Thanks again lizdb

Another idea!
Have you found the parents on 1911? And do they indicate how many children they had and how many are still alive? (Sorry 1911 look ups arent allowed, so I cant boss in).  If you have then followed all the other Bear children, then hopefully with a bit of luck you can deduce at least if Caroline is still alive in 1911!
That might narrow down a bit what is going on with her.
Like you I cant see her anywhere, or death, or marriage.
All I can think is either she married and it is grossly mistranscribed, she changed her name, or went abroad as a missionary or something.

And another idea.
When all her numerous brothers and sisters marry, is she a witness on any of their marriage certs? Or is there a witness called Caroline something, who might be her under a married name?

Just as a point of interest this asylum became Warley Hospital in 1953, it closed in 2011 and the records are at Essex archives, my job took me there every day.

Lots of records too! I had an ancestor who was a patient there, and I spent hours at the ERO reading all about his stay there, his condition, doctors reports, his "treatment" ( rubbing fat on his chest? And similar) and finally his death.
Warley Hospital (ex lunatic asylum) is now a new housing estate, with just one or two original buildings remaining.
