Germany: finding birth certificate
« on: Friday 17 April 09 13:51 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to track down my grandfather's german birth certificate.

He was born on 26 April 1912 and his name is Fred Rothschild. Would anyone know any useful databases or sources I could use to track down the certificate?

many thanks,

Daniel

Do you know where he was born other than "Germany"?
There are no big national databases (and in addition often records are restricted within the past 100 years).
I presume he emigrated - where to and when?
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi. I think he was born in Stuttgart and emigrated to the US sometime around 1930/40. In the event there are no databases as such, do you have any idea what one can do to find a birth record?

thank so much!

Hi
For a birth certificate you would need to contact the Standesamt (registration office) at the town your Grandfather was born in.

Depending if your Grandfather is alive- I assume not- then they will probably allowing you to purchase a copy.

This link gives you the central Stuttgart Standesamt details. There is an email address. It would be best to write in German with an English translation. I am sure they were give you good advice as to whether they can help.

All the best
