English regiment in Ireland
« on: Wednesday 22 October 14 00:38 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor from England Henry Taylor who married Bridget Butler from Ireland in 1848. The marriage record under notes reads [ PRIEST NR ] **RLS. Does anyone know what this means?

I think it means that the priest who performed the ceremony was not of the parish i.e. (not resident)
This post is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws. Unfortunately my preferred method of writing (Parker Quink on Basildon Bond) cannot be used.

Thankyou! There is a story in my family that Henry was a Sargent and I am trying to track this down. The family had 2 daughters in Ireland and then Henry returns to England where he is listed as an Engineers Tool Maker.

This was before permanent headquarters so they were all British not English, Scottish, Irish.

The name is too common. You need to supply more information, such as his date and place of birth; the name, date, place of birth for any children. Plus links to later census.

You should also ask a Moderator to move it to Armed Forces.

Hello Kat and welcome  :)

You obviously have the marriage record so where did they marry?
I can only see a Henry and Bridget in Manchester 1851 but there are not two daughters. He is an Engineer though  :)

All sorts of information may help so it is best to post if you have a bit more.

Regards
Heywood

Thank you for your help--I am new to all of this and I appreciate the suggestions. I do have a marriage date: 22 Aug 1848 Parish Birr, County Offaly. Denomination is RC for both and under occupation it states: 1 Royals ( I will post this under Armed Forces as well). I have a Rebecca Taylor born to Henry and Bridget Taylor 23 July 1850 and baptized 22 Aug 1850 County Limerick. Under address it states: Barrack, St. John's.

Yes, I saw those in 1861 but the wife is Mary   ??? Born Parsonstown.

Did they go back to Offaly?

Dear Heywood---yes! Therein lies much confusion! I have gone back as far as a daughter Mary Jane Taylor who was born 30 Nov 1852, possibly in Cork and died in Vancouver BC 2 Mar 1932. However, I can't find her birth records in Ireland. She and her two sisters, Rebecca and Susannah moved to England with their parents. There a fourth sister is born--Margaret: 04 May 1859 in Sheffield Brightside, County of York. This is where I am stuck!

Margaret is shown as born a few days earlier on this baptism record.

Civil Birth records did not begin until 1864 in Ireland. You would be looking for baptism records.
