Gretna Green Marriage 1855
« on: Wednesday 29 June 11 15:18 BST (UK) »
This is a general enquiry, I have a record of a marriage that took place in Gretna Green in June 1855, does anyone know if there would have been a marriage certificate issued, or would the marriage have only been entered in a book.
Also I am visiting Gretna later on in the year, is there a way I can find out where-abouts in Gretna this marriage took place if there is no Marriage cert.
If someone could supply me with some answers I would be grateful.

This may help a little:
http://www.joannawaugh.com/Articles.html
(there is some info towards the bottom of this article)

It sounds like marriages took place in various locations. Of course there's the famous 'Smithy' promoted as the place where marriages over the anvil were performed, though it's hard to know what's fact and what's concocted to pull in the tourists.

Who performed your Gretna marriage?

Copies of marriage entries via the link that gnu provided is quite expensive. Gretna marriages are on Ancestry now, though it sounds like you already have a copy of your entry?

I don't know if the couple received a copy of the entry (my guess is 'no'  ;)) - someone else may be able to answer that one for you.

Some marriage records for that area were discussed in this thread

Emma provided this link to records of irregular and border runaway records
