Noticed also that Archives New Zealand at Wellington, have this Coroner's file.  [The Coroner's report into death of Robert SEARIGHT doesn't appear to have been published in any of the newspapers - that I could see, anyway ? ]

http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24320350

Coroner :  Greymouth - 17 September  1873 :  Inquest proceedings ... and Robert SEARIGHT - 1873

It may contain further info (hopefully place of birth ?? )

Thank you Lu - thats fantastic!

I did not think of looking for the Seabright variant and now have a definitively link to my Searight ancestor. Ive ordered the marriage and death certificates and Spades is assisting with the ITMs.

I didnt see the archway file previously. I dont want to overload Spades with my requests  :o but will add that to my list of files to be sought.

Thats my tree. I put in information for that part of my tree based on heresay to see if it brought up any matches. It did but no one has linked all three Searights. The newspaper articles appear to provide a relationship between Andrew and Catherine in their probates with Robert being involved. At least thats the way Im reading it.

Robert Searights wife remarried a man named Mawhinney and had more children. Its one of their descendants who gave me the possible place of birth. Its plotted in but at this stage will remain unconfirmed.

Searight update:

Today I received the death certificates of Robert and Andrew plus the marriage certificates of Robert, Andrew and Catherine Searight.

At Catherines marriage to Robert Patterson the witnesses were Robert and Elizabeth Searight. Catherine was listed as a minor. They married in Brighton on the West Coast. The minister was Joseph White

Andrew married Lucy Spring in Mr Daniel Lynch Sawn Hotel in Hokitika in 1869. Andrews age was listed as 23. Witnesses were John McAlister and Isabella Newton. Minister A Martin.

Robert Searight marriage to Eliza Morton on 3 July at the residence of Rev Joseph White, Charleston, West Coast. Witnesses Margaret White and John Reid Pattinson? Glasgow, Miner of Charlston.

Andrew Searight death 2 Feb 1889 at Devils Creek - Progress  Mine. Age 50 years (Im not sure why there is such a big difference between his marriage and death) Father listed as William Searight and mother was Rosanna Smith. Birthplace Londonderry, Ireland. Had been in New Zealand for 28 years (I still haven't found a shipping record for them). 5 children survived him.
Robert Searight death 13 Aug in the Grey River Hospital, Greymouth. Listed as 32 years old. Occupation publican.

Thank you Spades.

Interesting the marriage ITM for Robert Searight says his length of Residence was 4 days. Does that mean he was in Charleston for 4 days or in New Zealand?

As I still havent been able to find the Searights arriving in New Zealand Im hoping it might be the latter.

Hi Revolution,

Length of residence meant the person's length of stay in the intended place of marriage, in this case Charleston.

You might find this topic helpful in your search for their arrival, especially the section, When did they come?, which gives some ideas about where to look.

For elimination purposes, a family named SEABRIGHT arrived at Dunedin in 1861 from Melbourne aboard the Dunedin.

I can't see any SEARIGHT arrivals at present.
