Mott Family - Questions Re 1901 Census & a Marriage.
« on: Thursday 26 June 14 19:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

A distant rellie, Clara Warburton (1861/62-1946) married John William Mott (1860-1919) on 11th June 1882 at St George, Hulme, Manchester.

They had six children as follows:

Thomas Edward Mott (1882-?) married Edith Ellen Towse in 1907.
Minnie Mott (1884-?) married Walter Barker in 1911.
Florence Mott (1886-?) married ?.
John William Mott (1887-?) married Edith J Roberts in 1915.
Emily Jane Mott (1888-?) married George E Stephenson in 1914.
Clara Mott (1893-?) married William Fisher in 1916.

I have familysearch census detail for the family both before and after Clara & John William's marriage. However, from 1901, there seems to have been some problem/s beset the family.

In 1901, Clara Mott Snr is staying with her widowed father Thomas Warburton (1836-1919) in Hulme, South Manchester. with them is the children Thomas E, Minnie, Florence & Clara Jnr.

John William Mott Snr is in an institution in Withington, South Manchester & seems to be in the same place in 1911 & I suspect that he dies there in 1919. What is the institution?

John William Mott Jnr is in another institution, this time in Styal in Cheshire. He is back home in Stretford with the family in 1911. What institution was he in, in 1901?

I have been unable to find Emily Jane in 1901, she is definately alive, as she appears at home in Stretford with the family in 1911 & as noted above marries in 1914. Where is Emily Jane in 1901?

Lastly after 1901, there seems to be no trace of Florence Mott. No marriage, no death & missing in 1911. I am not asking for a 1911 search as I know that that is not allowed on here, I am just stating what I know. What happened to Florence?

If anyone can help with this, I would be grateful. Apologies for the length of the post, but wanted to avoid duplicating what is already known.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

The Withington institution was probably the Chorlton Union workhouse hospital, which became Nell Lane Hospital, then Withington Hospital.

The Styal institution was probably the cottage Homes for Children - both Withington and Styal sites are described here:

Hi Craclyn & Barbara H,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

Craclyn, that's certainly a possibility, that Florence married a Harry Fieldhouse at Manchester Register Office according to LancsBMD website. I'll certainly check that one out!

Barbara H, just caught your reply as I was typing this, many thanks for both the info & the links, I will take a look at those now!

Thanks again.

Kind regards

David.

1901
John Mott  53 Builder and Joiner employer
Nellie Mott  25
William Mott  24
Florence Mott  22
3761/33/9/46

I think that this is the Florence Mott who married Harry Fieldhouse so it doesn't look like your Florence.
