Other thing I meant to mention was to trace the family in all possible census records. If Hugh or Ann are found on 1911 census (we can't do lookups for that particular one) there might be a more exact place of birth.

If you post the details you have so far we might be able to help you find more in Welsh records.

Yes, but 1911 might say a more exact place of birth.

And why have you posted on Cavan board if they were from Monaghan?

"somebody on roots chat told me they might have been from cavran" ? exactly what information did they give you? to look for Irish ancestors in this timeframe you will need all the clues you can get.

Found the earlier posts-

"1871 in Longwood Yorkshire Hugh and Ann show County 'Cavern' which I am assuming to be Cavan
1881 shows Monaghan"

did you ever get the marriage or one of the children's birth certificates?
think I might have found there marriage 1846 Milford Anne morrow and Hugh Gallagher it's the only one I can find x :)

And 1861 census gives more details-
Hi again,

I would say that this is Bernard's birth registration on Free BMD

Barnat Galahar March quarter 1848 Brecknock vol 26 pg 269

Just found them in 1861   2553/ 79/24
Ollerset Hamlet, Derbyshire

Hugh Collogan 38 yrs Maker and hawker of tinware  b Ireland Town of Cavin
Ann Collogan 35 yrs  b Ireland Farmonick
Bernard Collogan 13 yrs b Brecon Wales
Winifred Collogan 7 yrs b Durham Bishop Auckland
Rosa Collogan 5 yrs b Derbyshire New Mills
Hugh Collogan 3 yrs b Durham Bishop Auckland
Mary Collogan 1yr b Yorkshire Halifax

 Farmonick could be Fermanagh

Looking at this, it would be good to get that certificate for Bernard because of the gap between Bernard and Winifred. There could be a second marriage for Hugh, or there could be more births with deaths of infants.

regards
heywood

It's the 1881 census that shows 'Monaghan'

It's against Ancestry terms & conditions (and thus Rootschat copyright policy) to ask for Ancestry lookups. You can search English & Welsh vital records (births, marriages, deaths) on FreeBMD site but you really need Ann's maiden name to be sure of match (as I explained and was also explained previously).
