Carter Family of Field Farm 1871
« on: Saturday 25 October 14 05:46 BST (UK) »
Can any body give me any information at all about the Carter Family of Field Farm, Lew. Oxfordshire between 1868 to 1872 .
I had a great great grandmother, Florence Rhoda Orpwood (aka Harper)  who was 'in service' to the family in 1871 ,when she would have been about 16 and if she was in service prior to that even younger ! she then came to Australia in June 1873.
I would like to learn about the family and how long she was with them and what sort of work she may have had to do.
Much appreciation
Kasden

The 1871 census shows her as a house maid with one other female house servant -  a General Servant - in a household with farmer, his wife and 7 children.   As you have seen the farm was a large one with 380 acres and the farmer employed 11 men, 3 boys and 4 women on the farm so they must have been well off.  The present day farm looks large http://www.fieldfarm.co.uk/

This site may be useful to give an idea of the scope of work of a Victorian farm house maid

Hi

Caution the hyperlink you have been sent to the Field Farm site takes you to a Field Farm site in Lewknor which is in the south east of the county of Oxfordshire and NOT to Field Farm at Lew near Witney in the West of Oxfordshire which is where the Carters farmed.

Stratford - Gloucestershire,

Apologies if I have the wrong place/family

I was looking at Rhoda Harper born 1856 Watlington, Oxfordshire and in 1871 working as a servant with the Carter family in  Field Farm in Lewknor

Hi Kay
I think that you have it right.
I am looking for Florence Orpwood who was also known as Florence Harper, born 1855-56 in Watlington and working as a Housemaid at Field Farm in 1871 prior to her departure aboard the Ramsay bound for Australia in June 1873.
Do you know how long she might have worked there or perhaps what she was doing between 1871 and 1873?
Many thanks for your help.
(Did both of 'Field Farms' mentioned have Carter families ??!!)

Hi Kay
I wasn't suggesting anyone is wrong -  I was simply stating that the original post refers to Lew which is near Witney in West Oxfordshire not Lewknor, Nr Watlington in South Oxfordshire.

However it is great to see that as a consequence of your suggestion the originator of this post has changed his / her mind about where the quest is located so that's great all round.

Happy hunting

Hi Both

I should have explained the background to my suggestion more thoroughly :) From your original post kasden's  I thought you already had seen the 1871 census with Florence/Rhoda. I couldn't see a Carter family living at Lew at Field Farm only the family at Field Farm, Lewknor.

Fascinating how the family use Harper instead of Orpwood   :)
