GRONI online has the civil marriage record for Patrick McLaughlin and Annie Doherty, it took place on 1 January 1902 and was registered in Derry, the full record including digitised image is available for £2:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

Courtesy of the RootsIreland website marriage search index, Patrick's father was Peter McLaughlin, Annie's father was Patrick Doherty.

By playing around between the GRONI online and RootsIreland website search facilities (and bearing in mind the information in the 1911 census record), a possible candidate for Annie Doherty is one born on 17 November 1881 to Patrick Doherty and Elizabeth Irwin (RootIreland cites the forenames as Annie Frances).

Patrick Doherty and Elizabeth Irwin got married in Long Tower (St. Columb) RC church on 4 November 1862.

Edited to add: Some other potential children to this couple (and siblings to Annie) are:

Ellen 1868: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPT3-1WL
Catherine 1870: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F5KN-RXQ
James 1876: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGK6-62Z

Also possibly...

Elizabeth 1865:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F51X-YBW
Margaret 1869: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPDK-LVM

The RootsIreland website search index for these given parents also brings back an 1863 baptism for Mary Doherty, an 1879 birth and baptism for Patrick Doherty, and an 1884 birth for Bridget Doherty.

Based on this information, this is a candidate for the Doherty family in 1901:

As far as Patrick McLaughlin's parentage is concerned, there is a Peter McLaughlin who married a Mary Gibbons in Long Tower (St. Columb) RC church on 13 February 1871, they went on to have a child Patrick baptised in St. Eugene's, Derry, in 1875.

This age is slightly out from the Patrick in the 1911 census and I'm less comfortable with this, compared to the suggested parents for Annie Frances Doherty, but simply worth noting for now until you can rule in or out.

Hopefully, someone will post something less speculative for his side.

Well done Gaffy a great bit of research.

Thanks Dathai, but disappointed I could see nothing firmer on the Patrick McLaughlin side of the family, perhaps fresh eyes will...

It's a pity that the articles don't name his parents isn't it.

We used to love him in our family. I remember seeing him at our local theatre- waving our hankies to 'Goodbye'.  :)
We used to play guessing games- no television- and one was initials. No one could guess mine - J F.   My mother and older sister laughed so much when they had to give in and I said proudly, 'Josey Flock'  :D

I hope you find a connection.

I remember my parents liked him too, until my cousin who worked for lawyers in Manchester when his wife was divorcing him, told them what he was like when not in public.  There are always two sides to every story, but I guess 50% of what my cousin said was probably true.  Of course in those days nothing was splashed all over the press unlike it would be today.
