Family Tree/pedigree
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 19:45 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I joined this forum and entered some questions in 2006! I have had a few problems since then and am now able to resume my quest for my father's details.

His name is Percy Ames Houlden. Born in Dover, Kent 4.6.1870. May I ask guidance as to how to proceed in this research.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Colin

Hi Colin

Welcome back :D

If you don't already have it getting his birth certificate to confirm parents would be the first thing to do, then you can start finding him on censuses. Although there appears to be only one possibility, so you shouldn't have difficulty. I can post details but you might prefer to do this yourself. You can search Freebmd for registration details. If you don't have a subscription for one of the genealogy sites such as Ancestry, large libraries, records offices etc usually do.

Hi there,

As he was born in 1870 -- you should be able to find him on the 1871 census record with his parents and any siblings. You should also find him on all the following censuses up to 1911 (1911 is the most recent census open to public view).

May I suggest you arm yourself with a pedigree chart --- you can download these free from various genealogy websites.

There are transcribed census records on Family Search (www.familysearch.org) -- but if you are prepared to pay a subsciption you can join Ancestry or Find My Past or other similar sites. You will then be able to view actual census pages --- much more satisfying.

Good Luck -- and enjoy your research!

Blimey!! Bearcat, Pennines and Janine. That's fantastic!
When I first got my computer in 1985, I did a bit if searching, and arrived at a page where the whole family tree/pedigree was listed from his grandparents. I then had a few medical problems and was unable to use the computer for some years and forgot how I got to the site where the complete family tree was laid out when I started looking again!
I am now back and about to restart my search!
The details that you found and copied for me are just what I am trying to find. I shall try to follow up on your leads, and thank you all very much.
If I have any problems I shall return for more advice - if I may?!!

Kind regards

Colin.
