The Wall's in Sedgley
« on: Tuesday 15 July 14 21:19 BST (UK) »
My paternal great grandfather, surname Wall moved to the North East from Sedgley, Dudley in around 1871. He was called Denis and his father Daniel they were all associated with the mining industry. If anyone has any info of any kind it would be appreciated.
Also my great grandfathers elder sister Roseanna married a bricklayer named James Hickman. However in 1887 he is a publican running the Stamford Arms in that area (Stourbridge). I believe the pub no longer exists but he ran it until 1900 when his son in law Josiah took over until 1910. If anyone knows anything about James or any details on the pub would be appreciated.

Rosanna 23.6.1811 Sedgley
Jane 18.6.1815 Bilston Navigator from Bradley
Mary 11.8.1816 Bilston labourer Bradley
Eliza 11.10.1818 Bilston Bradley labourer
Elizabeth 30.7.1820 same
Joseph 31.1.1822 same
Agnes 13.7.1823 Gornall Gornal wood labourer

As you can see there is a nice gap for Daniel 1811-15

Thank you very much for the info Ciderdrinker I really appreciate it. I did know parts of this and I suppose I am trying to find out more about the area Walls lived in and what it was like at the time. Again thanks for your help and anything else you know would be very helpful.

Just a beginner but I noticed your post about the Walls in Sedgley right away..

Like you my paternal great grandfather Wall was called Denis and his father was Daniel, and like you all my Walls seem to have been in the mining industry.

My father is Bernard Wall (b1928), son of my grandfather Arthur Wall (b1891), who was son of my great grandfather William Wall (b1854) and his wife Raynor Holmes. William’s siblings were Denis Wall (b1848), Rose Hannah (Rosanna b1839), Elizabeth, Mariann, Issac, Daniel, Sarah, John.

It would seem that your great grandfather Denis, and my great grandfather called William were brothers, with a sister Rosehannah (or Rosanna) who  married the bridklayer James Hickman (b1839). They were both 22 when they had daughter Ann or Hannah (b1860). She possibly married Josiah although census shows his surname as Hickman too – was he actually a son, a son-in-law or did he have the same surname? Hannah (& possibly Josiah) had three children May, Sarah and William. Around that time James and Rosehannah lived at 41 Summit Place Sedgley and later in life they lived at 64 Tansey Green, Pensnett, Dudley.

Denis, William and Rosehannah and their siblings were children of Daniel Wall (b1812) and wife Sarah Collins. Daniel’s parents were Dennis Wall (b1791) and Sarah Hale (b1792).

About the pub and those people I have no idea as I live in Melbourne Australia, although born in Derbyshire where my roots lie.

Happy family hunting,

Regards
Susan Wall

Hi Susan great to hear from you it appears we are distant relatives. All the information you have given falls into place. Denis moved away from Sedgley with his new wife who I believe was pregnant with my grandfather. From Sedgley he went to the Sheffield area where my grandfather John was born and then they moved up here to the North East of England where they carried on mining and living just north of Blyth which is around 12 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne.
My grandfathers career path changed radically when in 1908 he became the assistant lighthouse keeper here in Blyth taking over as chief lighthouse keeper before his retirement. If you are interested I can give many more details. Should you wish to contact me my e mail address is davewall_spartans78@hotmail.com.

Thanks

Dave
