Tithe Applotment Books
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 12:15 BST (UK) »
Hi can anybody help?

I have been looking at the 'Tithe Applotment books' for Galway and I am reading the following things in column 1:

'The half Cartron of Clougbee'
'The bighouse half Cartron'
'Furnish Whole Cartron'

Can somebody please advise what is a 'Cartron' or am I reading it incorrectly

Regards
Brian

Are you looking at this Tithe record online? can you post a link to the page (if it's not a subscription site)?

Seems to be this one
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587459/004587459_00448.pdf

Some sort of measurement
Donell oge O Mullvihill of Derry (recte: Derreen) in Galway county, gentleman, held a half cartron of the four quarters of Ballineclunty in the barony of Longford about 1618. At the same time William boy (‘buidhe’ or ‘yellow’) O Mulvihill of Derrin, gentleman, held another half cartron or a one thirty second portion of Ballineclunty. Two others of the family, who would appear to have been brothers, Donell McShane Imulvihill and Edmund McShane Imulvihill of Derrin, gentlemen, jointly held a half cartron of Ballineclunty.

If you google "cartron land" you get sites giving explanation of this term.It was a land division of about 30 acres. The term derives from Irish for quarter.
